Another week, another sample session….This week I’m slowing it down a bit. Included are the full length original tracks that gave inspiration to today’s and yesterday’s Hip Hop artists & producers.
Included in this mix of original samples are tracks that were sampled by the likes of Just Blaze, Kanye West, 9th Wonder, J Dilla, and more. These songs have been chopped, spliced, slowed down, sped up, and even interpolated by artists such as De La Soul, Jay-Z, Common, P. Diddy, Little Brother, Nas, Rick Ross, and more….
See how many originals you know, or try and guess who utilized the samples and give me a shout back. I purposely didn’t add who sampled what because that would take away all the fun of listening to something new.
Click play, relax, and guess the samples..

I’ve always wanted to do a Sample Sessions for A Tribe Called Quest. Well I’ve finally gone ahead and put a little something together that any fan of ATCQ will appreciate and thoroughly enjoy. I purposely did not write which songs used the samples below, that’s an exercise that’ll be more fun for you, So have fun reminiscing about those back pack days of Hip Hop, the glory days….I hope I’ve opened a few ears to something new.

I’m going way back to a simpler time. A time when the internet was nothing more than a thick yellow book called the yellow pages. Rotary phones that hung on kitchen walls were all the rave, and cable TV was a 13″ b/w set with rabbit ears covered in tin foil, and a pair of vice grips were your remote control.
Before the CD was looked at as the all to end all, I mean, how can you get more technological than a disc that is played with a laser? Hello MP3’s and digital media.
This mix will take you back to the age of the Mom & Pop record stores…You know the one’s you’d run to as soon as you received your allowance. A time when being the “first” to hear something meant more than just bragging rights, you were in the know, and took pride in that.
I miss those times. I miss waiting all week just to hear DJ Red Alert and Mister Magic play a couple of hours of Hip-Hop Music. I miss staying up until 4am, just to make sure I didn’t miss the freestyle sessions on the Bobbito & DJ Stretch Armstrong show on WKCR (Columbia Univ. radio). The anticipation made you appreciate the art that much more. I miss pure Hip Hop….Before it became a copy cat medium, Before it became a business…most of all, before the exploitation.
This mix will always remind me of the beginning and golden age of Hip Hop music because this is the music that inspired that culture, as pure as it’s ever been, or ever will be.

The news of Michael Jackson’s death took us all by surprise. To pass at the young age of 50 is not only tragic, but hard to fathom, even for someone whose declining health was obvious to those who witnessed his decades long transformation.
I grew up with Michael Jackson. Not in the McCauley Caulkin sense, but with his music as the backdrop to my life’s soundtrack. From getting my first grind on off “Dancing Machine”, to reveling at his Invincible album (last great album in my eyes), Michael Jackson has been a musical constant for close to all my 41 years of life.
Regardless of the media’s portrayal of MJ, or my own opinions of his seemingly strange relationship to young boys, Michael Jackson will always be considered one of the Greatest musical talents of this or any generation. His worldwide appeal surpasses that of Elvis and The Beatles combined. His legacy will live on forever. We love you Mike, and will certainly miss you. Your music will always endure however, and for that we are grateful.
May your soul rest in eternal peace!! God Bless you and your Family.

DJ Slish steps up to the plate once again to hit us off with some of the hottest joints you never heard of. If you listen to mainstream radio, then you probably haven’t heard any of these tracks. DJ Slish believes that good music is still being created by true artists, and refuses to accept the notion that if it’s not on radio, it’s not a hit.
The tracks in this mix are by some sexy females you may have heard of. Some of the artists are new to the music scene, but not new to music. Call it what you want, Neo-Soul, New Soul, R&B, or Black music; you will enjoy this fresh look at where music is headed.
So sit back, relax, and turn it up in your iPod….and Vibe!

First, I would like to thank all of you for showing me love on this site. I’m thankful my boy Grantlove has allowed me to express myself in this format. That being said lets get down to business.
On occasion, when radio starts to bore me, (Urban radio bores me quite often); I tend to gravitate towards the not so conventional. It could be Afro Beat, Latin house or even Bossa Nova. Anyway, my ears have taken journey’s to so many places I’ve acquired an overabundance of musical knowledge along the way.
This week’s playlist is byproduct of those many trips. So FOLKS! Close your eyes, click that arrow, imagine yourself in a faraway land, and

Piggybacking off of DJ Slish’s great work last week with The Valley, I’m going to reach a little further back. Hip-Hop music has various era’s and genres within itself; so when one says Old School Rap or Old School Hip Hop, it’s still a very vague description. I’m going to try and be as descriptive as possible, so you know exactly how it’s going down!
Back in the late 70’s DJ’s would travel around with sound systems and play music in the parks for everyone to come out and have a great time. The popular music at the time was Disco, R&B, and of course Rock. Well us kids in the Bronx weren’t too keen on the big haired rock bands, or the disco kings and queens (some were both) with all their opulence and flair. R&B was cool, but we knew something was missing.
Soon parties, or Jams at the park were as commonplace as the radio, and the word started to spread about this wonderful new sound that was emanating from the Streets in the Bronx.
Parties soon became showcases, and those showcases even led to Movies like Wild Style and several others. This new musical energy was transcending all areas of life and popular culture. The radio soon became an outlet for some of the lucky ones, Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, & Kurtis Blow to name a few. Most of the artists, back then known only as MC such and such, or DJ this and that. Everyone had ego’s, partly because you had to. Everyone wanted to Rap, and pretty soon everyone could.
I remember being banned from going to Haffen Park after dark because of the street violence that often occurred, but not even my Mother could keep me away from those Beats. Me, my boy Jamel, and another member of our Church, the late Edmund Perry, who’s life was tragically taken from us in one of the most racially charged cases in New York History, used to hang out together after church service on Sundays. We would all go hang out at the house of another member of our congregation. He was a little older than us, and could Pop & Lock like nobody’s business. We called Larry and his brothers Earl & Lorenzo the Parker Brothers, and we looked up to them for many reasons.
Larry would go on to join the Hip Hop group Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five as Larry Love, break-dancer extraordinaire; taking us under his wing and allowing us to be free of adult supervision. We would listen to Hip Hop, dance, and sometimes sneak into venues like Harlem World & The T-Connection. We would experience the sounds of Kool Herc first hand. It was the Beginning of a phenomenon, we just didn’t know it yet.
Jamel and I still stay in touch, although we are now many miles apart. The memories I have of us growing up in Hip Hop are innumerable, even the bad memory of getting our radio stolen while visiting a Church in Brooklyn. We skipped out of service and thought we were grown enough to bop down the street playing a worn out tape of Rappers Delight. LMAO!! We were scared senseless at the time, but look back on it now as a learning experience. What did we learn? That the streets of Brooklyn was no place for three young teens to act grown. We didn’t just listen to Hip Hop, we were a part of Hip Hop. From its Genesis, to it’s current standing on the Worlds stage, I will forever be a Hip Hop Head. It may not have the same impact as it did 30 years ago, but the essence of Hip Hop will never grow old, or die in the hearts of those who were there when it all started.
DJ Slish was the perfect candidate, and pretty much the only person I know who loves old school music as I do. When talking about Old School Hip-Hop one has to be specific. You see nowadays, one person’s Old School can be in an entirely different era than others. If you are in your 20’s for instance, Jay-Z & Nas could be considered Old School. The thirty-somethings can look back to Biggie and Tupac as their Forefathers of Hip-Hop. Well, myself and DJ Slish, as well as fellow 40+ Hip-Hop heads know what Old School Really is.
The songs in this playlist could very well be a History lesson on various types of Old School Hip-Hop. From Doug E. Fresh and Public Enemy, to MC Lyte and Ultramagnetic…Slish blends these classics with reckless abandon, forcing you to sing, or better yet, Rap along.
This set is called The Valley because that’s where we grew up. Going to the Haffen Park to watch the DJ’s spin the hottest Hip Hop and R&B tracks was a revelation to my prepubescent ears. Aurally engaged while watching the DJ’s cut it up, and the MC’s served up their Freshest rhymes.
1978 to 1986 was the Golden Era of Hip Hop. The Parties were Tight, the girls were Fresh, and the music was Dope!
This set will undoubtedly become a classic, so put it in your iPhone, iPod, Zune, PSP, or just download to your desktop and bob your head as if your hearing these treasures for the first time.
“SLISH DID IT AGAIN, OH NO….”
Next week I’ll be taking it back quite a bit further. A mix of late 70’s and early 80’s Hip-Hop, and the songs that inspired the DJ’s to create this new form of Music, that has since taken over the world….It’s called “The Genesis”.

I remember back in the late 80’s or was it the early 90’s I was introduced to house music. When I heard it I was like “This sounds like DISCO from the 70’s!” The beat was sooo infectious! I watched my peers move to it like they were possessed by the DEVIL! Soon after I fell victim and dragged my boy GrantLOVE right along with me. So I wasn’t surprised when he requested I come up with an Old School Classic House mix for the masses to enjoy. I call this one Armpit Sweat. Why??? Cause when your done listening to it you’re gonna need deodorant and at least two towels to stop the sweating from all the Dancing you’ll be doing !
