Piggybacking off of DJ Slish’s great work last week with The Valley, I’m going to reach a little further back. Hip-Hop music has various era’s and genres within itself; so when one says Old School Rap or Old School Hip Hop, it’s still a very vague description. I’m going to try and be as descriptive as possible, so you know exactly how it’s going down!
Back in the late 70’s DJ’s would travel around with sound systems and play music in the parks for everyone to come out and have a great time. The popular music at the time was Disco, R&B, and of course Rock. Well us kids in the Bronx weren’t too keen on the big haired rock bands, or the disco kings and queens (some were both) with all their opulence and flair. R&B was cool, but we knew something was missing.
Soon parties, or Jams at the park were as commonplace as the radio, and the word started to spread about this wonderful new sound that was emanating from the Streets in the Bronx.
I remember being banned from going to Haffen Park after dark because of the street violence that often occurred, but not even my Mother could keep me away from those Beats. Me, my boy Jamel, and another member of our Church, the late Edmund Perry, who’s life was tragically taken from us in one of the most racially charged cases in New York History, used to hang out together after church service on Sundays. We would all go hang out at the house of another member of our congregation. He was a little older than us, and could Pop & Lock like nobody’s business. We called Larry and his brothers Earl & Lorenzo, the Parker Brothers, and we looked up to them for many reasons.
Larry would go on to join the Hip Hop group Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five as Larry Love, break-dancer extraordinaire; taking us under his wing and allowing us to be free of adult supervision. We would listen to Hip Hop, dance, and sometimes sneak into venues like Harlem World & The T-Connection. We would experience the sounds of Kool Herc first hand. It was the Beginning of a phenomenon, we just didn’t know it yet.
Remember ” It’s not old, if it’s NEW to You!”
