No Substitution, Synthetic or Otherwise:R.I.P Melvin Bliss

If I asked what Old School artist is responsible for the most sampled Break beat in Hip-Hop history, whose name would immediately come to mind? I’d venture to say most responses would be James Brown or George Clinton. If you are a casual Hip Hop follower, or under the age of 30, Melvin Bliss would definitely not be your answer.

Melvin Bliss recorded “Synthetic Substitution” as a B-Side, with Bernard “Pretty” Purdie on drums, creating the most popular Drum Break in Hip Hop history. As a lover of classic material, I can tell you firsthand that the Drum Break isn’t the only thing epic about this record.

Melvin Bliss passed away and is no longer with us, his epic song however will always be heard, in so many places. Rest In Peace.

Melvin Bliss – Synthetic Substitution

Here is a link to some examples of artists who sampled “Synthetic Substitution.”

Check the preview to an upcoming documentary on Melvin Bliss. I’m sure now that he has passed, there will be many more in the works.

Stay tuned for a Hip Hop tribute to be posted soon.
